We put it to a vote, and according to this poll most people wanted us to feature dA's Goth & Emo avatars. This article features all of the FREE avatars submitted to the FreeAvatarsAndMore during the month of March 2010. Other free avatars are included here also because they're fun works of 50x50 goth/emo art too!
About Stereotypes: Some stereotypes are little more than an exaggeration of a certain set of characteristics. They become kind of like cultural caricatures of an extreme type, often used in art as a sign of the times within society. This article is just for fun; please don't take the following generalizations too seriously. These features are meant to pay tribute to dA's Goth and Emo art and artists.
Background: In terms of both music and fashion, Emo and Goth are the subcultures that resulted from the Post-Punk Rockers in the 1970s. These modern day "punks" commonly seem to be misunderstood as depressed, self-harming, suicidal, dark, moody, and even morbid freaks. However, just like Punks of the 70s, this stereotype doesn't represent the majority in either of these modern subcultures.
These two subcultures are often confused for one another, so this article will hopefully help you differentiate between Goth and Emo.
What is Goth? Black lipstick, black nail polish, black eye-liner, black boots... This is the stereotype, along with striped stockings and sometimes bright hair colors, that many people associate with Goth. Goth fashion is usually inspired by punk style mixed with 19th century medieval revival and Victorian influences. It's called Goth because this subculture mostly produces Gothic Rock music.
What is Emo? Black hair seems to be the most essential black according to the stereotypical Emo kid's fashion sense. Black hair, often with long bangs, a t-shirt under a hoodie, some skinny jeans and a pair of converse high tops is the generalization for Emo style. The look is kind of androgynous; boy/girl gender specifics are downplayed. Emo gets its name from Emotional Hardcore, the kind of music that comes from this subculture.
shidabeeda offers some nice interactive Flash dress up games to give you examples of the differences in Goth and Emo fashion:
Here are several devious Goth & Emo freebies that you can wear as your dA avatar as long as you please adhere to each artist's terms of use:

i really do love these icons, thank you for featuring them ^^
although i dont exactly know about the title of the journal... i think youre taking the emo stereotype of crying/death/darkness a bit far... i do love my icon (black cat) but im not emo
again i love these, i just think its a bit offensive
